Legal Center Intervention Stops Discrimination by Flowertown Festival

The Flowertown Festival in Summerville, NC

February 8, 2013 – Following the legal center’s intervention, the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry will be able to participate in the YMCA’s Flowertown Festival in Summerville, South Carolina, alongside other community groups.

The festival’s organizers had refused to do lease a booth to the coalition, saying that it would not be acceptable because the YMCA is “a Christian organization.” This violated Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes it illegal for businesses that are places of public accommodation to discriminate against or refuse to do business with someone because of attributes such as their race, gender or religious views.
